See ticketsOpened in 1910, Old Trafford is the largest club stadium in the UK, with over 74,000 seats. Sir Bobby Charlton nicknamed it the "Theatre of Dreams", a name that stuck. It stands in Trafford, west of Manchester city centre, at the end of Sir Matt Busby Way, lined with shops and stalls on match days.
The stadium has four stands linked by enclosed corners: the huge four-tier Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, the Stretford End where the most loyal fans sing, the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand with the dugouts, and the East Stand, which hosts away fans in one corner.
Old Trafford was bombed during the Second World War, rebuilt and expanded several times since. The club has announced plans for a much larger new stadium next to the current one: until then, every game here is a big occasion, and the biggest fixtures sell out well in advance.
Each stand offers a different experience. Here is what you need to know.
Stretford End
United fans' legendary stand, behind the west goal. This is where the atmosphere is loudest, especially in the lower rows.
Sir Alex Ferguson Stand
The stadium's largest stand, over four tiers, named after the club's most successful manager. Tiers 3 and 4 give a panoramic view, and it houses the Manchester and Salford suites.
Sir Bobby Charlton Stand
Side stand facing the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, with the dugouts, the directors' box and several suites. Seats here are very close to the pitch.
East Stand
Behind the east goal, also known as the Scoreboard End. Away fans sit in its corner next to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand (E132, E230 to E232).
Metrolink tram, Old Trafford stop (Altrincham line): about a 10-minute walk to the stadium via Sir Matt Busby Way.
Tram, Exchange Quay stop (Eccles line): about a 10-minute walk, often less crowded after the match.
From Manchester city centre (Piccadilly or Deansgate): 15 to 20 minutes by tram, or about 40 minutes on foot.
Two rivalries stand out: Liverpool, England's other most successful club, and Manchester City, the neighbours United face in the city derby. Games against Leeds, Arsenal or Chelsea also have a special edge. For these matches, expect much higher prices and book early.
On top of the Premier League (19 matches at Old Trafford), United play the FA Cup every season, which they have won more than ten times, and the Carabao Cup. Depending on their league position, the club also plays the Champions League or the Europa League. That usually means 25 to 30 home games a year.
Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugout, Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law on the pitch, then Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, the club's all-time top scorer, and Cristiano Ronaldo: the list is long. For French fans, Eric Cantona remains "The King", and Fabien Barthez, Laurent Blanc, Patrice Evra, Paul Pogba and Raphaël Varane all wore the red shirt.
It all began in 1878 with Newton Heath, a railway company's works team. On the brink of bankruptcy, the club was rescued in 1902, renamed Manchester United, and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Under Sir Matt Busby, United built a team of young talents, the "Busby Babes", tragically struck by the Munich air disaster in 1958. The club recovered and in 1968 became the first English club to win the European Cup.
The Sir Alex Ferguson era (1986-2013) made United England's benchmark: thirteen league titles, the historic 1999 treble and a second Champions League in 2008. With 20 league titles, United remains one of the most successful clubs in the country, still seeking to recapture that level since Ferguson's departure.
Manchester United's next home game is Manchester United - Aston Villa on Sunday, 8 November 2026 at 16:30. Seats start from €88 on our comparison.

It all depends on the opponent and the stand. Clashes with Liverpool, City or Arsenal are the most expensive; games against lower-profile sides are more affordable. Right now, prices start from €84 on our site (per ticket, excluding fees). The top of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the East Stand are often the cheapest options.
For official ticketing, yes: seats go first to season-ticket holders and members, and public sales are rare. Without a membership, hospitality packages and the resale sites we compare are your best options. It's also the safest: don't take risks with sellers on social media or between individuals, a favourite ground for scammers. Our partners are selected for their reliability and guarantee their tickets: if a problem arises, their customer service offers a refund or an equivalent solution.
Manchester United play at Old Trafford, in Trafford, west of Manchester city centre. The stadium holds over 74,000 fans and is served by the Metrolink tram (Old Trafford and Exchange Quay stops).
Old Trafford offers many suites: the Manchester Suite and Salford Suite in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand suites near the directors' box, and the Executive Suites in the stadium corners. Our partners' VIP offers appear on each match map.
Old Trafford tickets are usually mobile tickets, shown on your phone at the entrances. They are sent a few days before the match, sometimes only 24 to 48 hours before. Each offer states the delivery method.
The guided stadium tour is generally not available on match days. To see the dressing rooms, the tunnel and the club museum, plan it for another day of your trip and check times on the official site.
