See ticketsThe Stadium of Light has been Sunderland's home since 1997. It was built on the site of the former Monkwearmouth colliery on the banks of the River Wear, and its name honours the miners who worked there: a miner's lamp even stands at the stadium entrance.
With around 49,000 seats, it is one of the biggest grounds in England. It has two large two-tier stands, the East Stand and the West Stand, which houses the VIP areas, the Roker End behind one goal, recalling the old Roker Park ground, and the Carling Stand behind the other.
The atmosphere is famous across the north of England, especially for the derby against Newcastle. Since the club's return to the Premier League in 2025, the stadium is drawing impressive crowds again.
Each stand offers a different experience. Here is what you need to know.
West Stand
The main two-tier stand, with the dugouts, boxes and most hospitality lounges. A very good central view.
East Stand
Two-tier side stand opposite the West Stand. Often a good compromise between view and price.
Roker End
Behind the goal, over two tiers, in tribute to the old Roker Park ground. One of the stands with the strongest atmosphere.
Carling Stand
Behind the other goal. It houses a few boxes and seats that are often more affordable than the side stands.
Metro, St Peter's and Stadium of Light stations: about a 5-minute walk, with direct links from Newcastle.
Sunderland station: about a 15-minute walk across Wearmouth Bridge.
From Newcastle: about 30 minutes by Metro, a handy option if you stay in the nearby city.
The Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle is one of the fiercest rivalries in English football: two neighbouring cities, two colours, and a match that matters more than anything to the fans. It is by far the most sought-after and expensive game of the season at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland have been English champions six times, the last in 1936, and won two FA Cups. The 1973 win against Leeds, while the club was in the second tier, remains one of the greatest upsets in the competition's history. The club plays the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
Charlie Buchan, Raich Carter, Len Shackleton and Bobby Gurney, the club's all-time top scorer, brought glory to Sunderland. Goalkeeper Jim Montgomery, the hero of 1973, Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, remain fan favourites. More recently, French manager Régis Le Bris led the club back to the Premier League.
Sunderland AFC was founded in 1879 by schoolteacher James Allan as Sunderland and District Teachers AFC. In the 1890s the club dominated English football with a side nicknamed "the team of all talents", champions three times in four years.
Sunderland played at Roker Park from 1898 to 1997 and enjoyed its finest hours there, including the 1936 title and the 1937 FA Cup. The "Black Cats" nickname comes from a military battery stationed by the river in the 19th century and a black cat that became the club's lucky charm.
After years of ups and downs, back-to-back relegations in 2017 and 2018 sent the club to the third tier, a period followed by the documentary series "Sunderland 'Til I Die". The recovery was spectacular: in 2025 Sunderland won the Championship play-offs and returned to the Premier League.
The Black Cats' next home game: Sunderland - Chelsea on Sunday, 8 November 2026 at 14:00. On our comparison, tickets start from €80.

The Newcastle derby is by far the most expensive game, followed by visits from big clubs. Right now, tickets start from €51 on our site (per ticket, excluding fees). With a large stadium, other games are often more affordable than at most Premier League clubs, especially in the upper tiers.
Season-ticket holders and members get priority at official ticketing, especially for big games. Without a membership, hospitality packages and the resale sites we compare are the safest option: avoid sales on social media, where scams are common. Our partners are selected for their reliability and guarantee their tickets: if there's a problem, their customer service offers a refund or a solution.
The stadium is north of Sunderland city centre, on the River Wear. St Peter's and Stadium of Light Metro stations are about a 5-minute walk away. Sunderland station, served by trains from Newcastle and London, is about a 15-minute walk.
Yes. The West Stand houses the main hospitality areas, with boxes, lounges and central seats, and more boxes are in the Carling Stand. Our partners' VIP offers are shown on each match map.
Sunderland tickets are usually mobile, shown on your phone at the entrance. They are sent a few days before the match, sometimes the day before. The delivery method is stated on each offer.
Tours are generally not run on match days. To go behind the scenes, book the tour for another day and check dates on the club's official site.
